I received a new C.I. Skillet for Christmas and want to care for it properly so it lasts :-)
I found this website %26lt;%26gt;http://whatscookingamerica.net/Informati...
I "cured" it with oil like the directions said, but it has a shiny black spot left in the center. Is this an excess-spot of oil absorption? Did I burn the oil while curing it? Do I need to scour, wash, and start over? Thanks for any advice...... :-)
Caring for my Cast Iron Skillet?
When the whole skillett is shiny and black it is finally finished curing. It takes several uses and proper care for that to happen but it is worth is! Do NOT attempt to remove the "spot". It is the beginning of something great.

Reply:A cast iron pan is very tough and it will last you a while even if you aren't caring for it! it is the best kind of pans to get and they work awesome for cooking on cook stoves, just make sure and use oil, butter, or cooking spray on it or the stuff your cooking will stick to it!
Reply:Yeah, the shiny black spot is just extra oil that did not soak in. Smear it around if it bothers you, or just let it sit there until you're ready to cook.

I have no idea I am using my mothers cast iron..
Reply:i would say you are good to go the dark spot isn't a big deal and the link you put didn't come up but i never wash mine i only wipe it out with a dry towel after it cool good luck i love mine
Reply:I cook with cast iron all the time. I love em!! NEVER use soap on them. Sometimes I will use a coarse salt and clean them , put some in the pan and with a rag..scrub it all over. They last forever!!
Reply:DOn't worry about the spot. You can just take a paper towel and rub it around until it's absorbed. I love mine, take good care of it!
