11. Choose the sentence that contains a shift in verb tenses.

A Although the LP records were old, we still like them.

B A huge wave built up, rolled toward the shore, and carried the surfers along with it.

C Buildings soared many stories high and cast long shadows into the streets.

D Children waved from the bus as we passed by.

12. Choose the sentence that contains a verb in passive voice.

A Will Ms. Libson be running for office this time?

B Signs in yards all over town proclaimed her candidacy.

C Verna Libson has been elected for the second term in a row.

D Dark, curly hair covered the newborn's head.

I think for 11 its C

and for 12 i thinks its D

I really need help! id just like to see my mom proud of me!?
11 is A and 12 is C. (I am positive that these answers are correct.)

In 11, the first part of the sentence is in past tense and the second part of the sentence is in present test. So that is the example of a shift in verb tenses.

For 12, the word been is the clue that C is passive. "In sentences written in passive voice, the subject receives the action expressed in the verb; the subject is acted upon. The agent performing the action may appear in a 'by the . . .' phrase or may be omitted." See this web page: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/g...
Reply:Yeah, A for 11 and D for 12.

in 11, the first half of the sentance uses the past tense "were" and then in the second half it switches to present tense "like"

Not entirely sure why D for 12, but it sounds right.
Reply:actually, I think 11 is A but 12 is still D
