1. c. They are both nominative case

2 no clue

3. a. Each needs a locker

4. a, both have plural subjects

5. c. These is the nominative case and well is an adverb

6. a

7. b
Reply:We thought it was ___ should go.

c)he who

is my gut instinct as he is a direct object of our thinking without a preposition. I might be wrong on this one though - people don't really talk like this these days and I'm only qualified with relation to what makes sense/doesn't make sense in real life!

2)For irregular verbs with singular subjects in the present tense, add -s to the basic form EXCEPT when the subject is?

a) I or you

This is rubbish. I am, you are, he is, she is (fair enough) but also we are, they are? I shoot (irregular verb as past tense is shot), you shoot, he shoots, she shoots but also WE shoot, THEY shoot. I mean, you mean, she meanS, he meanS, we mean, they mean.

True answer = I, you, we, you plural, they

3)Which on of the following sentences does not illustrate subject- verb agreement?

a) Each of the players need a locker.

Each (one) of the players (e.g. singular) needS a locker.

Sing subject adds an s to the verb form (need) in present tense.

4) Half the apples ___ on the floor, but some of them ___ on the table.

a)are;are

Both are plural (more than one): plural nouns + are.

5) ___ kinds of widgesr work ___

c)These;well

6)It is such ___ uninteresting essay that I could sarcely believe ____ university student wrote it.

an; a

Both articles are before a vowel in written text but university is pronounced with a consonant: Yooniversity and uninteresting is pronounced with a straightforward vowel.

7)He is ___ CPA,and his sister is _____M.D

b)a;an

because there is a vowel pronounced at the start of MD even though it is not written e.g. EM.DEE vs SEE PEE AY
Reply:1. The word "was" is a form of "to be", so it has to be followed with nominative case pronouns, so the answer is "C"

2. Choose one of the pronouns in the answers and put it in front of the word "runs". Then choose the answer that sounds best, or in this case worst. The answer is A.

3. The subject of this sentence is "each" a singular, third person subject, so the verb has to end in an "s". The answer is A.

4. There is more than one apple in question for each of the blanks, so the verb has to agree in number, be plural. Answer, A.

5. The subject "kinds" is plural, so you need a plural article before it, "these". The word that fits on the blank after work is an adverb because it tells how the widgesr works. "Good" is an adjective, so you need to use "well". Answer: C.

6. This is the hardest one. The word after the first blank starts with a vowel sound, so the article before it must be "an". The difficult part comes in that the word "university" starts with the same vowel, but the article should be "a". I think this is one of those many times when rules don't work too well in English. Practice and time will solve this one for you. A rule book probably won't.

7. This is the same problem as in 6, but an easier answer. "CPA" starts with a consonant sound, so it has to be preceded with "a". "M.D." starts with a vowel sound, so it follows "an".

Good luck. English is a difficult language.
